Garden Route road trip: a practical 7-day itinerary

The Garden Route is easy to underestimate because the distances look modest. Its value lies in the stops—beaches, forests, lagoons and trails—so the best itinerary uses two or three bases and refuses the temptation to tick every town.

Recommended basesTwo or three
Minimum useful timeFive nights

Days 1–2: reach the coast and slow down

From Cape Town, break the eastward journey thoughtfully rather than driving straight through. From George, begin around Wilderness and use the first two days for the lakes, beach and forest.

Days 3–5: Knysna or Plettenberg Bay

Choose one base. Knysna has lagoon character and central access; Plettenberg Bay brings beaches and Robberg closer. Day-trip between them rather than repacking.

  • Robberg Nature Reserve
  • Knysna lagoon and viewpoints
  • Local food, markets and unhurried beach time

Days 6–7: Tsitsikamma and onward

Give Tsitsikamma most of a day if you want a walk or activity. Continue toward Gqeberha for an Eastern Cape safari or return to George if flight schedules make that cleaner.
