Garden Route

A flexible coastal journey through lagoons, forests, beaches and small towns.

First-timer's guide

The Garden Route works best as a chain of good bases, not a daily hotel relay. Choose two or three towns, leave space for weather and detours, and measure the journey in experiences rather than kilometres covered.

Build your days around

The experiences worth making time for

01

Wilderness and the lakes

A relaxed base for beaches, canoeing, forest walks and an easier pace after Cape Town.

02

Knysna and Plettenberg Bay

Use one as a base for lagoons, restaurants, Robberg, beaches and day trips rather than checking in and out of both.

03

Tsitsikamma

Give the forest and coast enough time for the suspension bridges, trails and activities instead of treating it as a roadside photograph.

Plan it like a local

Do not turn every coastal town into an overnight stop. Two good bases usually create a better trip than five hurried check-ins.

Keep planning

Put Garden Route into a route that works.
