Start with the passport and visa rule for your nationality

Do not use another traveller's experience as proof. Check the South African Department of Home Affairs and the guidance issued for your passport. Make sure the passport condition, validity and blank-page requirements are met.

Check route-specific health and child documents

Yellow-fever documentation may be relevant when arriving from or transiting through a risk country. Adults travelling with children should verify the latest documentary requirements, especially where one parent is absent or the child is unaccompanied.

Complete the traveller declaration

Current government guidance states that travellers entering or leaving through air, land, sea and rail ports must submit an online traveller declaration from 1 July 2026. Confirm the official process shortly before travel.
