Build a small layering system
Use breathable day clothing, one warm mid-layer and a light wind or rain shell appropriate to the season. Safari vehicles can be cold before sunrise even when the afternoon is hot.
Pack for movement
Comfortable closed shoes cover city walks, easy trails and safari camps. Add sandals or a lighter pair, but avoid bringing different footwear for every activity.
Protect the essentials
Carry medication, documents, one change of clothing and important electronics in hand luggage. Use a soft-sided bag if a small regional flight or lodge transfer imposes stricter luggage limits.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need special safari clothing?
No. Comfortable muted colours, layers and closed shoes are enough for most drives. Technical expedition clothing is unnecessary for a normal lodge or self-drive safari.
Is South Africa cold?
It can be, especially on winter mornings inland and in the Cape's wet winter weather. Regional climate and time of day matter more than the national season label.
